BARTON NAMED DIRECTOR OF IPRT

AMES, Iowa -- Tom Barton, a distinguished professor of chemistry and director of the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory, has also been named director of the Institute for Physical Research and Technology (IPRT). Barton's appointment as director of IPRT is effective immediately.

Barton has been a member of the ISU faculty for more than 30 years. He was director of Ames Lab from 1988 to 1994 and returned as director in 1995. During his tenure at Iowa State, he has won numerous national, regional and local awards in teaching and research.

The director of IPRT coordinates the activities of the Ames Laboratory and 10 IPRT centers, including the Center for Nondestructive Evaluation and the Center for Advanced Technology Development.

Joel Snow, who has been IPRT director since 1993, will become executive associate director of the International Institute for Theoretical and Applied Physics (IITAP). Snow's appointment is effective immediately. Provost John Kozak said that the expanding roles of IITAP administrators facilitated such a change with the program growing in two directions -- international and national partnerships.

"Given Professor Snow's long experience in Washington, I believe Joel is well suited to assume the domestic portfolio of IITAP," Kozak said. Snow will help establish linkages with universities, government laboratories and federal granting agencies within the United States.

James Vary, director of IITAP, will now focus on expanding international partnerships. IITAP reports directly to Provost Kozak.

The Institute for Physical Research and Technology is a federation of research, technology development and technology transfer entities at Iowa State University. The International Institute for Theoretical and Applied Physics is an international physics center set up in partnership with the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization to foster world peace through the sharing of scientific advances.
