KIRKLAND NAMED ISURF/OIPTT DIRECTOR

AMES, Iowa -- Kenneth Kirkland, director of the Technology Commercialization Office at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, has been named executive director of the Iowa State University Research Foundation (ISURF) and director of the Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer (OIPTT). Kirkland's appointment is effective Aug. 1.

As ISURF director, Kirkland will manage Iowa State's intellectual property, protect the university's copyrights and trademarks, and be responsible for royalties that result from ISU inventions. OIPTT works in coordination with ISURF to bring new ISU innovations into the marketplace.

Kirkland has more than 20 years experience in developing and acquiring new products and technologies. He has been at Northern Illinois since 1995. From 1980-95, Kirkland was manager of technology assessment and acquisition at American Cyanamid, Princeton, N.J., and from 1976-79 he was technical manager at Cyanamid International Corp., Zurich, Switzerland.

Kirkland earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in weed science from Oregon State University, Corvallis. Kirkland succeeds Alan Paau, who left Iowa State last December for a similar position at the University of California-San Diego.
