IOWA STATE NAMES LIBRARY DEAN FINALISTS

AMES, Iowa -- Four finalists have been named in the search for a dean of library services at Iowa State University. The finalists are Olivia Madison, associate director for public services and collections and interim dean of library services, Iowa State; Keith Russell, deputy director of the National Agricultural Library, Beltsville, Md.; John Ulmschneider, associate director for information technology at The Libraries, North Carolina State University, Raleigh; and Thomas Wilding, director of libraries at the University of Texas, Arlington.

Ulmschneider will visit campus March 23-24, Wilding will visit March 26-27, Russell will visit March 30-31, and Madison will interview for the position April 1-3. Each will discuss "library services in the 21st century" at an open forum (followed by a reception), and participate in a discussion on diversity. Following is the schedule of events.

Ulmschneider has worked in the North Carolina State library system since 1986, the last 13 months as associate director of information technology. He also has served as interim associate director for technical services (1995-96), assistant director for library systems (1989-96), and head of library systems (1986-89). Previously, he was a systems manager at Swem Library, College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va., and spent three years at the National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, Md., as library associate and systems librarian. Currently he is involved in designing the technical and service aspects for a statewide database access program, for which the lead server will be housed at North Carolina State.

Ulmschneider received a B.A. (1976) in religious studies from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and an M.S. (1981) in library science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Wilding has directed the libraries at the University of Texas, Arlington, since 1993. As an adjunct faculty member at the University of North Texas, he teaches the academic libraries course in the Graduate School of Library and Information Sciences. Previously, he served for 13 years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries, Cambridge, as assistant and then associate director of administration, senior associate director and, for a year, as acting associate director for public services. He also spent 14 years at the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, Washington, D.C., as manager of a world-wide exchange program, research assistant to the director, and head of administrative services for the multi-site library system. He is the vice president/president-elect of the Library Administration and Management Association, a division of the American Library Association.

Wilding received an A.B. (1970) in English literature from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.; and an M.S. (1988) in library science from Simmons College, Boston.

Since 1995, Russell has served as deputy director of the National Agricultural Library, the largest ag library in the world and one of four national libraries. He has worked at the library since 1984, serving also as associate director for public services, acting associate director for automation and acting associate director for technical services. Russell previously was a program associate for three years at the Council on Library Resources, Washington, D.C., a private foundation that focuses on national solutions to major problems facing university and other research libraries.

He also was the head science and engineering librarian (1980- 81) at the University of Arizona, Tucson; and assistant to the staff and fiscal services librarian (1977-79) at the University of Texas, Austin. He worked at the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library, Houston (1972-76), first as head of the serials department and later as a research librarian. He has written or co-authored many reports on agricultural libraries and their role in ag research.

Russell received a B.S. (1966) in biology/geography education from Illinois State University, Normal; and M.S. degrees in botany/ecology (1971) and library science (1972) from the University of Illinois, Urbana.

Madison has been a member of the ISU library faculty since 1975 and interim library dean since August. She has led the serials cataloging section in the serials department, as well as the monographs and cataloging departments. From 1991 to January 1998, she served as assistant director for public services. Since January, she has been on temporary leave from her position as associate director for public services and collections. In that position, she works with two assistant directors (and the dean) to manage ISU's library system. As chair of the International Federation of Library Associations' section on cataloging, Madison will attend two international conferences to speak on a report recently completed on cataloging standards for international bibliographic standards.

Madison received a B.S. in history (1972) from Iowa State and an M.A. in library science (1975) from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

Former dean of library services Nancy Eaton left Iowa State in August to become dean of the university libraries at Pennsylvania State University, University Park.
