NPR STARS TO HELP KICK OFF WOI FM ANNIVERSARY

AMES, Iowa -- Several National Public Radio stars will help kick off WOI-FM's 50th Anniversary Year Celebration Saturday, Oct. 3.

NPR celebrities Neal Conan, Ira Flatow, Liane Hansen, Ray Suarez and Scott Simon will participate in a roundtable discussion of journalism Saturday afternoon in Des Moines, then head for the Iowa State University campus for a Saturday night party.

Joining the NPR stars at the State Historical Society of Iowa Building for a discussion of "Media at the Millennium: Journalism at the Crossroads" will be "Ames Daily Tribune" editor Michael Gartner and "Des Moines Register" political writer David Yepsen.

Two hundred tickets are available for the roundtable, which includes an 11 a.m. lunch, followed by the 12:30 discussion. Tickets ($35 each) can be ordered by sending a check or calling WOI Radio, Iowa State University, Communication Building, Ames, IA 50011, (800) 861-8000.

On Saturday evening, the NPR celebrities, along with current and former WOI personalities, invite the public to join them in the atrium of the Molecular Biology Building on the Iowa State campus for an informal get- together. Light snacks will be served from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets for this event are $10 (children under 12 free). They can be reserved in advance (1-800-861-8000) or will be available at the door.

NPR's Conan is correspondent and host of "Weekly Edition." Flatow is host of "Talk of the Nation's Science Friday", Hansen is host of "Weekend Edition Sunday," Suarez is host of "Talk of the Nation," and Simon is host of "Weekend Edition Saturday."
