SEAGRAVE NAMED INTERIM PROVOST

AMES, Iowa -- Richard Seagrave, Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering, has been named interim provost of Iowa State University. The appointment is effective Jan. 1, 1999.

ISU Provost John Kozak recently announced that he will leave the position he has held since 1992 to return to teaching and research. Kozak's resignation is effective Dec. 31, at which time he will join the faculty of the chemistry department. A national search for a new permanent provost will be launched soon, said John McCarroll, director of University Relations.

"I am personally delighted and grateful that such a distinguished member of the university's faculty is willing to serve as interim provost," said ISU President Martin Jischke. "I am confident that Professor Seagrave will do an excellent job and the university will continue to progress as we search for a permanent provost."

The provost is the university's chief academic officer, overseeing the university's eight colleges, ISU Extension and various research units.

Seagrave joined the ISU faculty in 1966 as an associate professor of chemical engineering. He was named professor in 1971 and distinguished professor in 1982. From 1974-1980, Seagrave served as professor-in-charge of ISU's biomedical engineering program. From 1983-1990, Seagrave served as chair of the chemical engineering department. He served as interim director of the ISU Computation Center from 1991-92.

He has served on numerous university committees, including the graduate college council and the university honors program. He has done extensive research on biomedical engineering and engineering for space occupancy. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Seagrave earned a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, in 1957, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from ISU in 1959 and 1961, respectively.
