IOWA STATE RANKS HIGH IN TECH TRANSFER MEASURES

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University ranked 14th nationally in royalties earned from licenses and patents in fiscal year 1997, according to a report from the Association of University Technology Managers. Iowa State earned $6.9 million from its licenses and patents, according to the annual report.

Iowa State ranked seventh nationally in both the number of licenses generating royalties (186) and in the number of start up companies (six) formed as a result of its technology transfer efforts.

Overall, royalty income from U.S. universities in fiscal year 1997 rose 33 per cent to a total of $446 million. The University of California system was first with $61.3 million in earnings, followed by Columbia University ($46.1 million) and Stanford University ($34 million).
