ISU ANNOUNCES NEW PROVOST

AMES, Iowa -- Rollin C. Richmond, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the State University of New York-Stony Brook, has been named provost at Iowa State University. The appointment is effective Sept. 15.

"Rollin Richmond has an outstanding background as both a professor in the biological sciences and as a university administrator. He will be a valuable asset to Iowa State as we pursue our goal of being the best land grant university in the country," said Martin Jischke, ISU president.

The provost is the chief academic officer of the university and oversees the university's eight colleges, ISU Extension and various research units.

Richmond has been provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, and professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the State University of New York-Stony Brook since 1995. Previously, Richmond was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Florida and chair of the biology department at Indiana University. Richmond has been active in the National Research Council, the Executive Committee of National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, the National Science Foundation Population Biology Panel, and NSF and National Institutes of Health research review committees. He received an A.B. in zoology from San Diego State University and a Ph.D. in genetics from The Rockefeller University.

ISU Provost John Kozak stepped down from the position in December 1998 to return to teaching and research. Richard Seagrave, Distinguished Professor of chemical engineering, has been serving as interim provost.
