CATT CENTER SUMMER WORKSHOP WILL FOCUS ON LEADERSHIP

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics is accepting nominations and applications for its seventh annual summer workshop for high school students. "Focus on Tomorrow's Leaders: New Voices for a New Millennium" will be July 14-17 at ISU.

The workshop is designed for students who are currently in 10th through 12th grades. Principals, counselors and teachers are invited to nominate students with an interest in politics, public service and leadership to attend the workshop.

Enrollment in the workshop is limited to 30 students to ensure small-group interaction and individual attention. The priority registration deadline is Friday, May 28.

Cost of the workshop is $250, which covers tuition, materials, housing, meals and refreshments. Scholarship opportunities may be available.

This year's workshop will focus on leadership, communication and problem-solving skills that will be useful to participants in their current activities, future careers and community service. Sessions are led by ISU faculty and business, government and community leaders.

"Students will learn about the changing leadership styles and strategies that are essential in the global world of the new millennium," said Dianne Bystrom, director of the Catt Center for Women and Politics.

In addition to leadership sessions, participants will experience life on a university campus, meet one-on-one with local and state leaders and work with ISU student mentors. Participants will conduct research on the Internet and do a small-group collaborative project.

Nomination forms have been mailed to high schools throughout the state. Interested students also are invited to apply to attend the workshop.
