ISU'S "A CELEBRATION OF FAMILY RESILIENCY" OPENS MARCH 23

AMES, Iowa -- A diverse mix of art exhibits and lectures on family issues will highlight "A Celebration of Resiliency," a six-month event organized by Iowa State University's College of Family and Consumer Sciences.

"A Celebration of Family Resiliency" will begin with a reception and opening of five art exhibits from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on March 23 in the Brunnier Art Museum in the Scheman Building. It is free and open to the public.

The exhibits at the Brunnier will explore individual, family and community resiliency. The exhibits will feature works by selected Iowa artists; portraits of deans of ISU's College of Family and Consumer Sciences; paintings by Elizabeth Layton, who learned to paint at age 68; and photographs by John Reese that examine a black community in Alabama. A sculpture called "Border Crossing" by artist Luis Jimenez will be installed on the ISU campus in April.

A short-term art exhibit will also be hosted. From April 26 - - May 1 and also from May 17 -- June 7, "Bridging the Generations" will be housed in the Brunnier Art Museum. The exhibit, organized by the Iowa Master Farm Homemakers Guild, presents the lives of eight rural Iowa women in photo and facts, who made a difference to families and society.

This celebration is being sponsored by the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, Iowa State University Extension, University Museums, Humanities Iowa, the National Endowment for the Humanities and Target.
