10-6-99 Contacts: Linda Dutton, Program for Women in Science and Engineering, (515) 294-5319 Skip Derra, News Service, (515) 294-4917 IOWA GIRLS TO HEAR ABOUT SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CAREERS AMES, Iowa -- Some 650 sixth through ninth graders will learn about career opportunities in science, engineering and technical fields, Thursday, Oct. 7, at Iowa State University. The "Taking the Road Less Traveled" conference is hosted by Iowa State's Program for Women in Science and Engineering. An opening presentation by Kristen Constant and Larry Genalo, of ISU's Materials Science and Engineering Department will be on "What's Hot and What's Not -- Modern Materials." The students also will learn about careers in environmental engineering, computer engineering, architecture, fisheries, wildlife biology, forensic science and veterinary science. "This is a great opportunity for young women," says PWSE conference coordinator Linda Dutton. "It exposes them to a variety of non-traditional career options and offers strategies for success." The conferences are extremely popular and organizers have had to turn away hundreds of girls (the conference has a 650 student maximum). A second conference for sixth through ninth graders will be Oct. 14, and a third conference for ninth through 12th graders will be Oct. 28. - 30 - Editors: Reporters are welcome to attend any or all of the career conference day. The conference begins at 8:55 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union at Iowa State, with the opening presentation at 9 a.m. At 9:45 a.m., the students break up into groups to learn about specific science, engineering and technical careers. |
