ISU CHILD DEVELOPMENT LABORATORY SCHOOL
TO CELEBRATE 75TH ANNIVERSARY SEPT. 26

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University will celebrate the 75th anniversary of its Child Development Laboratory School with an open house on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. The laboratory school is part of the ISU College of Family and Consumer Sciences.

The open house will be in the ISU Child Development Building. The building is in Richardson Court, across the street from Maple Hall. A celebration of the laboratory school’s anniversary will begin at 1:45 p.m.

The laboratory school opened with a nursery school for nine children in 1924. Today, the laboratory school offers five daily programs for about 100 preschoolers and school-aged children.

The school also provides observation and participatory experiences for Iowa State students preparing to be early childhood teachers and administrators and child and family specialists.

The open house will feature a photo display titled "75 Years of the Child Development Laboratory School." Children’s books, memorabilia, and equipment used by the laboratory’s school also will be on view.

The program will include brief remarks by Carol Meeks, dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, and Joan Herwig, director of the Laboratory School. Cy, the ISU Cyclone’s mascot, will be on hand. The open house will include a variety of activities for children, including a scavenger hunt. Cake and punch will be served.

"From the beginning of the laboratory school in 1924, we have provided a service in helping society meet the needs, relevant to the times, of children and families," Meeks said.

People attending the open house are recommended to park at the Iowa State Center. For more information, call Joan Herwig, (515) 294-6230.
