HUNDREDS OF SCARECROWS TO POP UP ON ISU CENTRAL CAMPUS

AMES, Iowa --. For a class project that has a hint of Halloween and a touch of "The Blair Witch Project," students in Bill Boon's Creativity 129 class will install more than 300 scarecrows on Iowa State University's central campus beginning at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30.

The project, dubbed "The Ides of September," is the latest in a series of wild exercises in creativity that Boon loves assigning his students. The scarecrows will be in "active" poses, said Boon. There will even be Tarzan and Jane scarecrows swinging from a tree.

The theory of vernacular design design that symbolizes a specific place inspired the project, Boon said. The life-size scarecrows, a symbol of farm fields and rural settings, will remain on display through the weekend.
