Amos Barrios-Muñoz didn’t even know if he would be able to go to college. But when a couple of friends wanted to join the National Guard, Barrios-Muñoz went to a meeting with the recruiter as well. Hearing about the opportunities that the Guard provided, and wanting to serve his community, Barrios-Muñoz decided to join himself. That led him to Iowa State, where he knew immediately that he wanted to focus on nutrition. Barrios-Muñoz had seen family members struggle with disease, and knew that better nutrition could be a way to help others avoid that same fate. After graduation, Barrios-Muñoz is going to continue serving in the National Guard while he pursues grad school in dietetics.
