Expert will speak about aging without falling March 31 at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa -- An internationally recognized expert on balance and mobility in aging populations will speak at Iowa State University Thursday, March 31.

Debbie Rose, the university's Pease Family Scholar in Kinesiology, will present "Preventing Falls in Older Adults" at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Sun Room. Her talk is free and open to the public.

Rose is a professor of kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton, where she directs the Center for Successful Aging and co-directs the Fall Prevention Center of Excellence. She developed the Fall ProofTM program, which the National Council on Aging recognized as a Best Practice program for promoting a healthy, active lifestyle. The program is used in many community-based settings and retirement communities throughout the United States.

Rose has served as a research consultant to several organizations and companies and has been invited to speak at international conferences, including the World Congress on Aging and Physical Activity. She is the author of numerous research publications and several book chapters on the subjects of fall risk reduction, motor control and learning, and balance and mobility disorders.

Rose is a fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology, and a past executive board member of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity. She is also the past Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity. Rose received her doctoral degree from Penn State University.

Rose's talk is co-sponsored by the Department of Kinesiology, Pease Family Scholar-in-Residence and Scholarship, and the Committee on Lectures, which is funded by Student Government.
