Researchers use lab data to rewrite equation for deformation, flow of watery glacier ice

Laboratory experiments designed to deform ice at its pressure-melting temperature were like grabbing a bagel at the top and the bottom, then twisting the two halves to smear the cream cheese in the middle, said Iowa State's Neal Iverson. The resulting data could lead to more accurate models of temperate glacier ice and better predictions of glacier flow and sea-level rise.

That could help them understand ocean conditions as the climate changes. Iowa State's Alan Wanamaker, a professor of earth, atmosphere and climate, has contributed to the clam studies.

Study: Iowa farmland values decline after 5-year climb

Lower crop prices and high interest rates halted a five-year rise in the average farmland value in Iowa, according to Iowa State's annual Land Value Survey. Cropland still is expensive at an average of about $11,500 per acre, the survey found, but average values declined about 3% from last year's record.
