ENGLISH PROFESSOR NAMED SHAKESHAFT MASTER TEACHER AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY



AMES, Iowa -- Stephen Pett, associate professor of English at Iowa State University, has been named the JerryShakeshaft Master Teacher in Humanities and Social Sciences for 2004 in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

A faculty member in Iowa State's department of English since 1983, Pett was a College of Liberal Arts and SciencesMaster Teacher in 2002. Pett is also the recipient of the 2004 Louis Thompson Distinguished Undergraduate TeachingAward. In two consecutive years in the late 1990s, he was named "Teacher of the Year" by the Native AmericanPreparatory School in Rowe, N.M., where he served as the English department chair.

As a classroom teacher, Pett has taught 12 undergraduate English courses at Iowa State. He has led Iowa Stateoff-campus courses in New Mexico and a study-abroad course in Ireland. His creative writing has been nominated forPushcart and Pulitzer Prizes.

The award was created in memory of Jerry Shakeshaft by his family, friends and colleagues. Shakeshaft was a long-timepolitical science professor at Iowa State who had a life-long dedication to undergraduate teaching.
