Iowa State professor named engineering fellow

AMES, Iowa -- Atul Kelkar, an Iowa State University professor of mechanical engineering, has been named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers International.

Less than 2 percent of the society's 120,000 members have been named fellows. The honor recognizes members who have at least 10 years of active engineering practice and have made significant contributions to the field.

Kelkar has received continuous research funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration since 1996. He studies control theory and applications with a primary focus on aerospace systems and vibration and noise control technology.

An initial goal of Kelkar's research was to reduce the noise inside airplanes. That work has grown to include development of a material that will control noise and vibrations in a variety of home and work environments.

Kelkar's research is being done through Vibroacoustics Solutions Inc., a startup company he co-founded in the Iowa State University Research Park.
