Statement from President Gregory Geoffroy in regard to Virginia Tech tragedy

Virginia Tech University today is dealing with an unspeakable tragedy. On behalf of everyone at Iowa State, I extend our sympathy and prayers to the students, faculty, staff and alumni at Virginia Tech, and to President Charles W. Steger. The loss of life is senseless and devastating.

ISU students who are following this tragedy and may be emotionally impacted are encouraged to call Student Counseling Service at (515) 294-5056 and ask to speak with a counselor.

Safety is, and always has been, a top priority at Iowa State. While we know that violence can happen anywhere, at any time, Iowa State has procedures in place to protect the campus community and respond to threatening incidents. University officers are well-trained and work closely with other area law enforcement agencies, including the Ames Police Department, Story County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa State Patrol.

Students, faculty, staff and visitors who encounter individuals or groups engaged in threatening conduct or who otherwise appear to be out of place should contact ISU Police immediately.

Gregory L. Geoffroy, President

Iowa State University
