Police investigating suspicious package

UPDATE (3:10 p.m.) The Iowa State University Police Department released the following information related to the investigation of a suspicious item found at Frederiksen Court: 

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State University Police received a report of a suspicious item near buildings 33 and 34 at Frederiksen Court Apartments around 9:20 a.m. on Monday, June 28.

Officers responded and located the items, a suitcase and a case connected by wires, in the grass near the roadway by building 34 Frederiksen Court. They determined further investigation was necessary and contacted the State Fire Marshall’s Office for assistance. As a precaution, buildings 31, 33 and 34 were evacuated while the State Fire Marshal’s Office investigated. The buildings are currently unoccupied for the summer, but cleaning crews and other staff were working in the area.

Ames Fire Department and Mary Greeley Medical Center paramedics provided support on scene while the investigation took place.

The State Fire Marshall’s Office examined the suitcase and determined there was no threat. The items were secured by ISU Police and the scene was cleared at 12:28 p.m. and an ISU Alert All Clear was sent at 12:31 p.m. 

UPDATE (12:40 p.m.) The suspicious item reported at Frederiksen Court was inspected and determined not to be a threat. The area is now reopened.

Iowa State University Police are investigating a suspicious package discovered outside building 34 at Frederiksen Court Apartments. Officers have evacuated surrounding buildings and relocated students and staff to the community center. Please avoid the area and check this page for updates.
