Moonshot science focus of 2022 Norman Borlaug lecture

AMES, Iowa – Thousands of decision-makers have relied on the research of 2022 World Food Prize laureate, Cynthia Rosenzweig, to adapt local, national and global food systems to changes in climate.

Rosenzweig, a senior research scientist and head of the Climate Impacts Group at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, will deliver this year’s Norman Borlaug lecture at Iowa State University. She will present “Moonshot Science for Climate Change and Food” at 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17, in the Memorial Union Great Hall.

After starting her career as a farmer, Rosenzweig has spent four decades studying the biophysical and socio-economic impacts that climate change and food systems have on each other. She most recently by founding the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP), a global, transdisciplinary network of more than 1,000 leading researchers in climate and food systems modeling.

Rosenzweig’s presentation will focus on the challenges of addressing food security and increasing climate extremes, and how moonshot science can provide the breakthroughs to respond to these dual challenges.

The annual Norman Borlaug lecture at Iowa State is named for the Cresco native and agronomist whose discoveries sparked the Green Revolution. Borlaug received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his international work in wheat research and production, which has saved millions of lives. He is the founder of the World Food Prize, which annually recognizes the achievements of individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world.

This lecture is co-sponsored by the Office of the President, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Human Sciences, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Seed Science Center, Nutritional Sciences Council and the Committee on Lectures, which is funded by Student Government.

The 19th Annual Norman Borlaug Lectureship Poster Competition will be held immediately preceding the lecture from 7-8 p.m. in the South Ballroom. The winners will be announced after the lecture.

The event will be recorded and available for two weeks on the Lectures website. Find more information about ISU lectures online or by calling 515-294-9934.
