Gartner

ISU summer commencement is Saturday

Commencement for all graduates, including master's and doctoral candidates, will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6 in Hilton Coliseum. Tickets aren't needed to attend the ceremony. Michael Gartner, president of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, is the commencement speaker. Gartner also is a lifelong journalist and principal owner of the Iowa Cubs.

Campus memorial for John Garang Aug. 6

The ISU Sudanese Student Association will sponsor a memorial service Aug. 6 for John Garang, newly appointed vice president of Sudan who died July 30 in an air crash. The service begins at 4 p.m. in the MU Great Hall.

"We were greatly saddened by the tragic death of John Garang," ISU President Gregory Geoffroy said recently. "Dr. Garang was a very prominent and important member of the Iowa State University family, and he has many friends here and among our university family throughout the world. We are very proud of the strong leadership he provided for the people of Sudan for so many years, and we hope his legacy will be one of peace and unity for the people of Sudan."

Iowa State University is bringing a Reiman Gardens-style oasis to the state fair this year. The university exhibit will be on the northeast end of the Varied Industries Building.

Search committee formed for selection of ag dean

A 21-member committee is beginning the search for the new dean of Iowa State University's College of Agriculture and director of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station. The search committee is chaired by Labh Hira, dean of the College of Business. Hira said the committee's goal is to name a new dean by the first of the year.

Geoffroy joins NCAA board of directors

ISU President Gregory Geoffroy has been named to the Division I board of directors of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as the representative of the Big 12 Conference.

Regents executive director to take new post

Gregory S. Nichols will resign his post as executive director of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, to become a special assistant to Iowa State President Gregory Geoffroy and lecturer in a university department.

NASA grant promotes science, tech education

NASA has awarded $1.2 million to an Iowa State program with a record of increasing the number of minority and disadvantaged students studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Schnable appointed PSI associate director

Patrick Schnable has been appointed associate director of the Plant Sciences Institute. Schnable has been active in the Plant Sciences Institute since its establishment in 1999.
