ISU’s annual Veishea celebration is under way

Veishea 2010 -- "Today's Vision, Tomorrow's Traditions" -- is in full swing, and student organizers have packed the week with concerts, displays, lectures, performances and other great activities. Here are some highlights and a list of events.

Dr. Stephen Juelsgaard Creates Endowed Deanship in College of Veterinary Medicine

An endowed dean's chair has been established in Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine thanks to a $3 million commitment from Dr. Stephen G. Juelsgaard of Woodside, Calif. The endowed fund will provide perpetual funding for college priorities and will be administered by the dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Two ISU landscape architecture seniors win international competition for park design

Landscape architecture seniors Andrew Kraemer and Adam Olson won the Park Pride International Student Design Competition and will share the $1,000 cash prize. The two created their 'Knoll Park" design in William Grundmann's community design studio. There were 33 entries in the competition. Olson, of Hudson, and Kraemer, of St. Louis, created their design, "Knoll Park," last fall in Associate Professor William Grundmann's community design studio. Classmate Stacie Ellickson, Boone, won an honorable mention for her design, "Loblolly Ridge Park."

Body of missing ISU student Jonathan Lacina identified

The Office of the State Medical Examiner has positively identified a body found in an outlying building on the former ISU Dairy Farm as that of missing Iowa State University student Jonathan Lacina.

Community memorials and funeral arrangements for Travis "TJ" Good announced

Faculty, staff and students in ISU's College of Engineering and the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering mourn the loss of civil engineering senior Travis "TJ" Good, who died unexpectedly on April 13. Initial lab tests at the hospital indicate the probable cause of death as bacterial meningitis.

In celebration of Good's life and his influence on many people throughout the university, the college and the department have organized memorial events for the Iowa State community.

Additionally, Good's family has provided information about visitation and funeral arrangements in Omaha.

ISU student dies; bacterial meningitis suspected

Iowa State University senior TJ Good has died at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Initial lab tests at the hospital indicate the probable cause of death as bacterial meningitis. Final results are pending from the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory in Ankeny.

Five Iowa State graduate programs score among the top 20 in U.S. News rankings

Iowa State University graduate programs in agricultural engineering, higher education administration, analytical chemistry, statistics and printmaking rank among the country's top programs, according to the latest "America's Best Graduate Schools" rankings by U.S. News and World Report magazine.

Culinary science students create new ISU Dining recipes through new class, internships

Students enrolled in the "Intro to Professional Skills in Culinary Science" course are required to become paid ISU Dining employees, where they work with the chefs and cooks in the kitchen on a new recipe to be served to students in the dining centers. If the new dish is well-received and cost-effective to prepare in large quantities, it may be considered for ISU Dining's regular menu rotation.

Hira makes Money Sense with NYSE Euronext

Tahira Hira, a professor of personal finance and consumer economics in Iowa State's Department of Human Development and Family Studies, recently worked with NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) Euronext developers on the launch of Money Sense, a new online resource for consumers to improve their money-management skills. She discusses her role in the project and also provides some practical money tips in a new video.

ISU rural sociologist named interim director of Leopold Center

Lois Wright Morton, a rural sociologist who has been a member of the ISU faculty for 11 years, will begin her appointment as interim director of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture on July 1.

Iowa State College of Business to host Big 12 MBA Case Competition April 23-24

Iowa State's College of Business will host this year's Big 12 MBA Case Competition on Friday and Saturday, April 23-24. Teams representing nearly all the schools in the Big 12 Conference will analyze a Harvard-style general business policy/strategic management case and present their findings and recommendations to a panel of judges.

Researcher helps identify gene responsible for healthier corn in developing areas

Maria Salas-Fernandez, an Iowa State University researcher, was part of team that is helping fill a nutritional hole in the diets of much of the population of developing countries. The group looked at how to introduce more vitamin A into corn hybrids to help cultures that depend on corn as a dietary staple.

Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression set for April 20

Seventy-three Iowa State undergraduates from all academic disciplines will display their research at the fourth annual Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression. The symposium will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, in the Memorial Union. The symposium provides undergraduates an opportunity to share their research with the university community, families and other guests through conference-style oral presentation sessions. The event is free and open to the public.

Veishea features late night with Dr. Drew on April 16

Producer and host of VH-1's "Celebrity Rehab," "Sober House" and "Sex Rehab," Dr. Drew Pinsky will host "Late Night with Dr. Drew" at 11 p.m. Friday, April 16, at Stephens Auditorium. Admission is free. Pinsky, a practicing medical doctor and host of the nationally syndicated radio show "Loveline," has been helping young adults with relationships, sexuality, and drug addiction problems for almost three decades. Immediately following Pinsky's talk, there will be a book signing downstairs in Stephens' Celebrity Cafe. More.
