New mega cookbook co-author Chris Young will speak at Iowa State April 4

Chris Young, co-author of "Modernist Cuisine," the new mega cookbook rocking the food world, will speak at 8 p.m. Monday, April 4. His talk, "Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking," will be in the Memorial Union Great Hall. Young co-authored the 2,400-page, six-volume "Modernist Cuisine" with Nathan Myhrvold and Maxime Bilet. They achieved new flavors and textures by using tools such as water baths, homogenizers and centrifuges, and ingredients that include hydrocolloids, emulsifiers and enzymes. The lecture is free and open to the public.

More than 550 young researchers show off projects, compete for scholarships

The State Science + Technology Fair of Iowa is Friday and Saturday, April 1 and 2, at Iowa State University's Hilton Coliseum and Scheman Building. The fair will bring 555 junior and high school students and their 424 research projects to campus. Public viewing hours for all projects are 12-5 p.m. on Friday. Junior high projects will also be on display from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.

Iowa State University President Gregory Geoffroy will step down

President Gregory Geoffroy today announced his intention to leave his post no later than July 31, 2012. He will remain president of Iowa State until a successor is named.

19th Annual Voorhees Supply Chain Conference to feature industry leaders on April 8

Iowa State University's College of Business will provide area business leaders the opportunity to learn about supply chain innovation from four proven experts at its 19th Annual Voorhees Supply Chain Conference -- also sponsored by John Deere, 3M and Boeing -- on Friday, April 8. Held this year for the first time at ISU's Reiman Gardens, the event will begin at 8:15 a.m. Additional information, including registration, is available online.

ISU alumnus, advisor to U.S. Department of State is Reiman Entrepreneurial Speaker

Rebecca Taylor -- an ISU computer science graduate who now serves the U.S. Department of State as a senior adviser, innovation and entrepreneurship, in the Office of Science and Technology Adviser to the Secretary of State -- will return to campus on Tuesday, March 29, for a Reiman Entrepreneurial Speaker Series event, sponsored by ISU's Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship. Her talk will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Memorial Union Sun Room. While the luncheon event is free and open to the public, pre-registration is required through the Pappajohn Center website.

Kress named vice president for extension and outreach at Iowa State

Cathann Kress, senior policy analyst and program lead for Military Community and Family Policy at the U.S. Department of Defense, Washington, D.C., will become Iowa State's next vice president for extension and outreach.

Blumenfeld invited to Department of Education event to improve LGBT campus climate

Warren Blumenfeld, an associate professor of curriculum and instruction at Iowa State, has been invited by the U.S. Department of Education's Higher Education Center for Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention to participate in a two-day meeting to explore strategies on how to improve the climate of LGBT students on college and university campuses. The event will take place April 4-5 in Washington, D.C.
