City snow ordinance in effect

The City of Ames Snow Ordinance is in effect. Snow routes are marked by red, white and blue signs, and cars parked on snow routes will be ticketed and towed. Cars should be moved to off-street parking or to streets that are not designated snow routes. The snow ordinance remains in effect until the streets are completely plowed from curb to curb, AND it has stopped snowing.

ISU sociologist, stepfamily researcher reports realities of more unmarried women

ISU Assistant Professor of Sociology Susan Stewart says that a New York Times analysis of 2001 census results finding that 51 percent of U.S. women are living without a husband shouldn't come as a surprise given recent demographic changes.

Reiman exhibit recalls famous ISU botanists

A plant exhibit at Reiman Gardens evokes memories of ISU botanist Louis Pammel and two of his illustrious students -- George Washington Carver and Ada Hayden. The "Stream of Passion" exhibit will be on display in the Reiman conservatory through April 1.

Activities to honor Martin Luther King Jr.

Several events in the ISU/Ames community will honor the memory of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Activities over several weeks will include birthday celebrations, a panel discussion and a lecture on King.

ISU seminar will present techniques to help noise-phobic pets

Thunderstorm anxiety and fear of loud, abrupt noises are common behavioral problems reported by pet owners, says Dr. Kim Langholz, a community practice veterinarian at Iowa State's College of Veterinary Medicine. Langholz will present a seminar, "Thunderstorm Anxiety and Noise Phobias," at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in room 2532 Veterinary Medicine building to discuss ways to help pets modify behavioral responses.

Reiman Gardens closed Jan. 23 due to water outage

Reiman Gardens will be closed to the public Tuesday, Jan. 23, due to a planned water outage at the facility. Workers will be upgrading water services in the area.

State LEGO championship brings 67 teams to Iowa State

The 2006 Iowa FIRST LEGO League Championship will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 20 in Howe and Hoover halls on the Iowa State University campus. The competition will attract 67 teams of school students from all over Iowa.

Three Iowa State College of Design programs ranked high by practitioners

State's programs in architecture, interior design and landscape architecture are among the nation's best, according to a survey of practitioners by DesignIntelligence. All three Iowa State programs ranked in the top 15.

Towns selected for 2007 community visioning program

Twelve Iowa communities have been selected to participate in the Iowa's Living Roadways Community Visioning Program in 2007. The award-winning program integrates technical landscape planning and design techniques with sustainable community action to assist community leaders and volunteers in making sound and meaningful decisions about the local landscape.

Jersey Jewel to grace new ISU Dairy Farm

Norma "Duffy" Lyon, the state fair's "Butter Cow Lady" and a 1951 ISU animal science alumna, has created a bronze sculpture for the Iowa State University Dairy Farm. Jersey Jewel will be installed on the lawn of the new Dairy/Animal Science Education and Discovery Facility when it's completed later this year. For now, the bronze is in the Kildee Hall atrium.

Researchers make metamaterials advancement

Ames Laboratory senior physicist and ISU Distinguished Professor Costas Soukoulis has designed a new metamaterial that exhibits negative defraction for visible light. The discovery is announced in the Jan. 5 issue of Science.
