Cyclone Families of Year honored this weekend

The Jerald and Cindy Deal family, Jefferson, and the Ken and Vicki Behrens family, Templeton, have been named the 2007 Cyclone Families of the Year by the Student Alumni Leadership Council. They will be inducted into the Alumni Association's Family of the Year Society and honored this weekend during Cyclone Family Weekend events.

Author and former economic hit man to speak at ISU Oct. 18

John Perkins, author of "The Secret History of the American Empire: Economic Hit Men, Jackals and the Truth About Global Corruption," will speak at Iowa State University as part of the World Affairs Series. at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 in the Memorial Union Sun Room. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Former World Food Prize winner to give Borlaug Lecture

Monty Jones, who won the 2004 World Food Prize for his breakthrough development of a new rice variety bred specifically for Africa, will present the fifth annual Norman Borlaug Lecture at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15 in the Memorial Union South Ballroom. His lecture, "Agricultural Research and Food Security in Africa," is free and open to the public.

U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) will be Iowa State's Fall 2007 Mary Louise Smith Chair in Women and Politics. The former First Lady and presidential candidate will present a free, public talk focusing on women and leadership on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 5:30 p.m., in Stephens Auditorium, Iowa State Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Iowa State University and Iowa Central Community College have joined forces to make it more convenient for Iowa Central students who want to earn a bachelor's degree to transfer to Iowa State.

Landscape architect to discuss wartime gardens Oct. 12

Kenneth Helphand will present the Department of Landscape Architecture's annual P.H. Elwood Lecture at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, in Kocimski Auditorium, College of Design. Helphand's lecture, "Defiant Gardens: Making Gardens in Wartime," will examine gardens of war in the 20th century.

ISU sociologist helps publish new books on juvenile delinquency, violent offenders

Associate Professor of Sociology Matt DeLisi is co-author of a new edition of the popular juvenile delinquency textbook "Delinquency in Society." He also joined with ISU sociology lecturer Pete Conis to co-edit another book due out later this month titled "Violent Offenders."

ISU business professors study impact of bankruptcy laws on entrepreneurial decisions

Three ISU management professors conducted a study of 90 Iowa small business owners and found they had very little awareness of bankruptcy protection available to them. They authored a paper on their study which will be published in the October issue of the Journal of Applied Management and Entrepreneurship.

Iowa State engineer develops technology to quickly find leaks in spacecraft

A research team led by Dale Chimenti, an Iowa State University professor of aerospace engineering, has developed a low-cost sensor that can help astronauts detect leaks on spacecraft such as the International Space Station.

Well-known economist, network analyst to give ISU's Stafford Lecture Oct. 16

Chris Low, chief economist for FTN Financial and a frequent TV network commentator, is the fall 2007 speaker for the Robert Stafford Lecture Series on Banking in ISU's College of Business. He will give his economic outlook during an 11 a.m. presentation on Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the South Prairie Room at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center.
