Iowa State researcher studies the sustainability of the bioeconomy

Will a bioeconomy that produces fuel and chemicals from biorenewable resources be sustainable? Robert Anex, an Iowa State associate professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering, is leading several studies looking for some answers. One study found an integrated process for producing ethanol from plant fiber could recycle plant nutrients back to the soil. Another project has developed a Web tool that helps farmers simulate how biomass production could affect their operations.

College of Design to break ground for addition

A ceremonial groundbreaking for the pavilion addition to the Iowa State University College of Design building will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, on the north side of the building. The first new "green" structure on campus, the addition will use energy-saving techniques, such as natural ventilation, daylighting, storm-water control with a "living" roof, unique site design and recycled building materials.

New teaching innovation, entrepreneurship projects funded by College of Human Sciences

The College of Human Sciences Entrepreneurial Program and Teaching Innovation Initiatives offered a total of $75,000 to fund winning proposals related to teaching innovations, and another $75,000 for entrepreneurial-related proposals. Seven new ISU faculty-led projects were funded through this new competitive initiative.

For the third consecutive year, Iowa State University is ranked among the top U.S. universities by Washington Monthly magazine. Washington Monthly bills its college rankings as a "guide not just to what colleges can do for you, but what colleges are doing for the country."

Iowa State and DMACC work together to increase engineering graduates

Iowa State University and Des Moines Area Community College will work together to attract more students to engineering. At Iowa State, the goal is 120 more students earning bachelor's degrees in engineering. At Des Moines Area Community College, the goal is more students studying science and technology. That's expected to increase the number of students transferring to Iowa State's College of Engineering.
