    Iowa State University scientists are leading a multi-institutional effort to reimagine cover crops by using perennial groundcovers. They hope the effort will lead to wider adoption of perennial groundcovers in order to protect the environment and benefit crop production. The researchers recently received a $10 million grant to support their work.

    Iowa State University scientists are leading an effort to improve efficiency and genetics in organic corn production. Most seeds bred for growing corn are suited to conventional agricultural systems, not organic. The prestigious awards, sometimes called “genius grants,” identify scientists, artists, entrepreneurs and others who have demonstrated exceptional creativity and who show promise for important future advances.

  • Researchers explain how nanomaterial aids antibody response, study it as antibody factory

    Iowa State researchers affiliated with the Nanovaccine Institute based on campus have explained how a nanomaterial initiates antibody production by the immune system's B cells. The technique could be used to turn B cells into factories that provide antibodies for diagnostic tests or treatments. That, according to a research paper, makes the nanomaterial platform "a highly versatile tool in the development of multiple countermeasures against emerging and reemerging infectious diseases.”

    C.G. “Turk” and Joyce A. McEwen Therkildsen have provided a $42 million gift commitment to Iowa State University’s Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering for a new facility that will provide technologically enhanced learning and research laboratory spaces.

  • Enrollment numbers reflect student interest in STEM fields

    Iowa State’s total fall enrollment of 30,708 includes 25,808 undergraduate, 4,264 graduate and 636 veterinary medicine students, representing all 99 Iowa counties, all 50 states and 112 different countries. While overall enrollment is down from last year, the university saw a 6% increase in new first-year students and a 1% increase in new graduate students.
