Iowa State reports find statewide retail sales are stabilizing after economic downturn

New retail reports by Liesl Eathington (right), an assistant scientist in Iowa State's Department of Economics, has found that retail sales in most Iowa regions appear to have stabilized over the past fiscal year following a substantial downturn during the recession. Iowa State's annual retail trade analysis is based on state-reported sales of goods and services subject to Iowa's statewide sales tax. Eathington found a slight growth in Iowa retail sales over the last fiscal year.

Get the dirt on soils during Soils Week at Iowa State University. The science, utilization, history and variety of one of Iowa's most valuable resources will be explored during three days of events during Soils Week March 28 to 30. All events are free and open to the public.

ISU Foundation president steps down

ISU Foundation President Dan Saftig has stepped down, effective March 19. This decision comes as newly appointed Iowa State University President Steven Leath continues to shape his role and assemble his executive leadership team.

30th Annual Textiles and Clothing Fashion Show set for April 14

The 30th annual Iowa State University Textiles and Clothing Fashion Show will take place on Saturday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in Stephens Auditorium. Student models wearing over 100 designs will walk the runway, with a separate exhibition for displayed entries available for viewing prior to the show at 6 p.m. This year's show will also feature a menswear line by award-winning guest designer and Iowa State alumnus Todd Snyder.

Filmmaker and investment banker Valerie Red-Horse to speak March 22

Entrepreneur, investment banker and filmmaker Valerie Red-Horse will present "Challenging the Status Quo for Native American Women: Stories from a Career in Film, Finance and Philanthropy" at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in the Memorial Union Sun Room. Red-Horse produced the PBS documentary, "True Whispers: The Story of Navajo Code Talkers." Her talk, which is part of Iowa State's Women's Leadership Series, is free and open to the public.

Iowa State graduate programs ranked among nation's best by U.S. News and World Report

Iowa State University's graduate program in biological/agricultural engineering remains among the country's top five programs, and ISU's College of Engineering is among the country's top 25 public programs, according to the latest rankings by U.S. News and World Report. Iowa State's rankings are listed in the magazine's annual "America's Best Graduate Schools" edition, published March 13.

Lee Hamilton to discuss U.S. foreign policy in March 27 Manatt-Phelps Lecture at ISU

Former Indiana congressman and U.S. foreign policy leader Lee Hamilton will present the 10th annual Manatt-Phelps Lecture in Political Science at Iowa State on Tuesday, March 27. The vice chairman of the nation's 9/11 Commission and co-chair of the Iraq Study Group, Hamilton will discuss "American Foreign Policy after Iraq and Afghanistan" at 8 p.m. in the Memorial Union's Great Hall.

Michael Crum named interim dean of Iowa State's College of Business

The search for the next dean in the Iowa State University College of Business will be temporarily halted until the university's next provost has been selected. Michael Crum (right), associate dean of graduate programs in the college and inaugural holder of the Ruan Chair in Supply Chain Management, will serve as interim dean and recipient of the Raisbeck Endowed Dean position, effective July 1.

Iowa State engineer discovers spider silk conducts heat as well as metals

Xinwei Wang, an Iowa State associate professor of mechanical engineering, is leading a study that found spider silk is very good at transferring heat. Spider silk, in fact, conducts heat as well or better than most metals. The findings were recently published in the journal Advanced Materials. Now that Wang knows a lot about spiders and their webs, one colleague calls him Iowa State's Spiderman.
